Why are pirates so cool?

Because they AAARRRRRRRGGGGHHHHHH! Today is National/World (I forget which) Talk Like a Pirate Day, and I feel a bit bad for not letting you know sooner... This post is also my TWO HUNDREDTH post on this blog, so that's a nice milestone too. It's going to be a pretty random post, though, as there are … Continue reading Why are pirates so cool?

Like a yo-yo

Just a quickie before I go up to London again (for Chemo Thursday, of course, but also an OMV meeting, a gig by my cousin's band - see '(the) Requiems' in my links) - and the occasional social event. What's more, I'm going to a wedding on Saturday: hurrah! I guess I'm at that age … Continue reading Like a yo-yo

Accidentally playing the cancer card

I was in London on Friday for Lou Noble's farewell drinks before she goes to New York for a couple of years, and after a few drinks at All Bar One in Clapham, we went on to the Clapham Grand to continue the celebrations (blood counts still good ).Katie C and I were a bit … Continue reading Accidentally playing the cancer card

Fun fun fun

Thank you for all the reassuring comments you added to my last post, even if I can't help but doubt I'd be hearing such compliments if I hadn't got leukaemia in the first place ;-).Anyway, it's been another decent time between posts, and once again that's due to FUN! I've been up to all sorts, … Continue reading Fun fun fun

So what do you do?

As you've probably spotted, my social life of late has been a bit more exciting than it was for the previous nine months or so... This has been wonderful, as I've tried to make the most of having decent blood counts for a change. It is very hard to be stuck in hospital, or sitting … Continue reading So what do you do?

Bring it on

I'm not a man to go around consolidating just once. Oh, no. Twice? Not me. Consolidation 3, here we go... Actually, I started this morning, having had good blood results again on Tuesday (I discovered that actually the normal level for haemoglobin is 13-17, and I'm about 11.6, but I was right that the other … Continue reading Bring it on

On to the past

Well, I've given you all plenty of time to read about last Thursday, so now I'll tell you about Wednesday and Tuesday, as promised. On Wednesday evening I went to Adam's, where I found not just Adam but also Rachael. We enjoyed a lovely meal courtesy of Adam's mother, and after lots of OMV chat (well, … Continue reading On to the past

Chillin’ at my homie

Five days and no blogging... I am sorry. I blame radiotherapy-induced lethargy (for the first day or two) and decent-blood-count-induced busyness (for the rest). I have been in the Big City, London! Having lovely blood counts (all within normal levels, I think... neutrophils: 2.6; WBC: 4.5; platelets: 230; haemoglobin: 11.6; I think) means I can … Continue reading Chillin’ at my homie

Second time lucky

Now I really HAVE finished the radiotherapy, which is good, as that's another phase to almost cross off (it doesn't really finish until Wednesday, with my last intrathecal chemo of this phase), though it was actually a bit sad in one way: I'd started to get to know some of the radiographers a bit. But … Continue reading Second time lucky

Make something foolproof…

George in t-shirt standing on a pontoon next to turquoise water, with a beach in the background…and they’ll invent a better fool.

I’m living life because I’m alive (woohoo!) – despite the best efforts of cancer. At the end of October 2005, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, at the age of 23.

Since then, I’ve recovered (2008), ‘survived’ (2013), relapsed (2013), had a stem cell transplant (2014) and recovered again (ongoing).

And I’m still here, thanks to amazing medical staff, bacon sandwiches, wonderful friends and family, my fabulous wife Mariacristina, a handy preference for taking things as they come and my superstar donor Tim.

A lot of it’s here, but I’d love to tell you more – I’m a writer and a speaker and love to share my story, so get in touch if we can do some good together.

The whole shebang, by date
